The Ballard High School PTSA awards the Jenny Lee Scholarship every Spring. Scholarship money is paid directly to the educational institution, and is awarded to a Ballard High School young woman, with a focus on those who will be attending two year college, in preparation for entry into a four year university, or entering into a two year degree program, and who have been brought up in a single parent environment. The scholarship is intended not so much for those who are high achievers, as it it those who have had success in less than ideal circumstances.
The Jenny Lee Scholarship as named in honor of Ballard High School mom, Jenny Lee. Jenny was the mother of Richard N. J. Lee, one of Ballard High School’s most prominent alumni. Some years ago, the Ballard High School PTSA wanted to acknowledge Dick’s contributions to Ballard High School, Dick’s suggested was to create the Jenny Lee Scholarship as a tribute to his mother.
The wife of a Ballard fisherman, Jenny Lee was the quintessential Ballard mom. Strong. Independent. Mrs. Lee was the ideal representation of the strong, driven Ballard young woman for whom this scholarship is intended.
